Rethinking Waste: Introducing Pretty Plastic Panels
TSustainability in construction is evolving—moving beyond carbon-focused strategies to embrace broader goals like waste reduction, circularity, and resource reuse. One innovative company leading this shift is Pretty Plastic, the Dutch design brand behind Pretty Plastic Panels, a bold and unconventional approach to building materials.
Pretty Plastic Panels are made entirely from recycled PVC waste—sourced from old window frames, downspouts, and other post-consumer and post-industrial sources. This material, long considered difficult to recycle, is transformed into durable, weather-resistant panels used for façades and roofing. The result is a high-impact, design-forward product that turns a waste problem into a design opportunity.
Unlike many sustainable products that focus on lightweight design to lower embodied carbon, Pretty Plastic Panels take a more holistic view. The panels prioritise waste diversion and closed-loop potential, challenging traditional sustainability assessments like Life Cycle Assessments (LCA), which often emphasise carbon metrics over material circularity.
For example, due to necessary overlapping during installation, the panels may score higher on Global Warming Potential (GWP) in an LCA. However, this overlap also allows a greater volume of recycled PVC to be incorporated—furthering the goal of keeping valuable material in use and out of landfills.
